Which should you choose?

Flux has replaced Midjourney as our primary image generation tool for production work. The photorealistic quality is comparable, the text rendering is better, and the API access via fal.ai means we can integrate it into automated pipelines. Midjourney still produces superior artistic and stylized output, and the community prompt sharing is valuable for creative exploration. But the lack of an API is a dealbreaker for production use. We cannot build reliable client workflows around a Discord bot. We use Midjourney for mood boards and creative direction during the concept phase, then switch to Flux for all production assets. If Midjourney ships an API, this recommendation changes immediately. Until then, Flux is the professional choice.

Key differences

  • Flux has API access via fal.ai, Midjourney has no official API
  • Flux is partially open-source (Schnell tier), Midjourney is proprietary
  • Midjourney has superior artistic style, Flux has superior photorealism
  • Flux has better text rendering in images
  • Midjourney has a large prompt-sharing community
