What is Outpainting?

AI technique for extending an image beyond its original boundaries. The model generates new content that seamlessly continues the composition in any direction.

How it works

Outpainting is the inverse of inpainting. Instead of filling in a region within an existing image, you extend the image beyond its original borders. The AI analyzes the existing content and generates new visual information that maintains consistency in style, perspective, lighting, and subject matter. This is useful for changing aspect ratios, creating panoramic versions of existing images, or extending backgrounds for different crop requirements. In production workflows, outpainting is commonly used when a client needs an image in multiple aspect ratios for different platforms.
